Behind the social media trend, “Dalgona Coffee”

Dalgona Coffee is originated in South Korea.

It was named after the country’s old-fashioned sugar candy called “ppopgi”, a famous toffee or honeycomb candy that’s placed on a stick.

Dalgona Coffee is made by whipping equal proportions of instant coffee, sugar and hot water until it becomes creamy and then adding it to cold or hot milk. Occasionally, it is topped with coffee powder, cocoa, crumbled biscuits, or honey.

The Social Media Trend

It all started in January 2020 when a famous Korean actor ( Jung Il Woo ) while in Macau for the TV Show (KBS World), was served with Dalgona Coffee and reminded him of South Korea’s specialty. He then made a video “Dalgona Coffee” in his Instagram Account: @jungilwoo_official .

Dalgona Coffee later took off in Instagram, Tik Tok and Youtube with the famous hashtags #DalgonaCoffee & #DalgonaCoffeeChallenge making it a social media trend across the globe.

Dalgona Coffee is also called “400 Coffee” (400번 저어먹는 커피) because most likely it would take you 400x of whipping just to perfectly achieve that frothiness.
